A potential customer types into ChatGPT: "What's the best marketing agency in New Jersey?"
ChatGPT gives a confident answer. It names 3–5 agencies. None of them are you.
That customer doesn't know you exist. They email one of the agencies ChatGPT named. You never get a chance.
This is happening to most businesses right now. Here is why — and what to do about it.
Why You're Invisible to AI Engines
AI language models build their knowledge from the web. But they don't just index pages — they build entity models. An entity is a business, person, or thing that the AI has enough consistent, corroborating information about to treat as real and authoritative.
If your business entity is not well-established across the web, AI engines either can't find you — or don't trust you enough to cite you.
The 5 Reasons Businesses Aren't Cited by AI
1. Inconsistent entity data. Your business name is "NextGen Web" on your website, "NextGen Web LLC" on LinkedIn, and "Next Gen Web" on Yelp. AI engines see three different entities — none of them authoritative.
2. No structured data. Without Schema.org markup, AI engines can't reliably extract what your business does, who it serves, or what it charges. You're plain text — not structured knowledge.
3. No FAQ schema. AI engines love structured Q&A content. FAQPage schema is how you pre-answer the questions your customers will ask the AI.
4. Missing from authority directories. ChatGPT and Perplexity cite businesses that appear on Clutch, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, and GoodFirms. If you're not there, you're not in the citation pool.
5. No topical depth. AI engines cite specialists. If your website covers 12 different topics with 200 words each, you're not authoritative on any of them. Deep content on specific topics is what gets you cited.
